8.0 Design Example Problem (Cont.)
Decomposition and decay in the old landfill will impact the structural integrity at the
foundation of the new landfill. A conservative assumption regarding bearing capacity will
be analyzed to assure that the integrity of the liner system is not compromised. It will be
assumed that a circular area with a 6 foot diameter looses all its bearing capacity at the
base of the liner system. The strain limit on the project will be S percent to reflect a
minimum factor of safety equal to 2.
A. Determine the long-term allowable design strength of a single layer
of uniaxial geogrid required to support the liner system in the new landfill.
B. If no connector is available to transfer the ultimate tensile strength
of the geogrid through a joint at the end of a roll, determine the
overlap length required for the material.
&I Design Example Solution
A. Calculate long-term allowable design strength for the geogrid
-10 Parameters
Soil Layer thickness H 1 = 3.5 ft.
Waste Layer thickness H 2 = 100 ft.
Average Soil Unit Weight (y 1 )
Y 1 _ 2(130) + 1(120)+.5(120) = 126 lbs/cf
3.5
Waste Unit Weight Y2 = 70 lbs/cf
AVG Soil Friction Angle (01)
C
(10)
