WMLI FU-08 October 2008
Forward Landfill Project No. 021605.08,
4.2 Earthfill
Earthfill is defined as material placed on the cell floor to replace material that was
over-excavated to below the established lining surface subgrade by the contractor.
Earthfill was removed from the borrow area and placed on the cell floor by scrapers.
The material was moisture conditioned in place by water trucks and compacted by a
CAT 815 sheepsfoot compactor. Vector CQA monitored placement and compaction
of material to ensure that a relative compaction of greater than 90% was achieved.
A summary of test results is included in Appendix C.
Vector CQA Monitors removed samples of earthfill from the field and performed
testing as per the project specifications. Approximately 15,000 cy of earthfill was
placed. CQA soil testing of the earthfill included:
Modified Proctor (ASTM D-1557): Vector's CQA Monitor performed one (1)
moisture-density relationships (ASTM D-1557), which corresponds to a frequency of
1 per 46,500 cy. A summary of test results is shown in Table 3. Results of the tests
are included in Appendix C.
TABLE 3
EARTHFILL LABORATORY TESTING SUMMARY
MODIFIED
SAMPLE SOIL PROCTOR
— NUMBER DESCRIPTION Pmax W%
SPECIFICATIONS N/A N/A
EF-1 Sandy Clay 108.1 20.1
Upon completion of the earthfill but prior to placement of LPSL within the FU-08
cell, a final survey of the established lining subgrade was performed. Following the
survey but before placement of LPSL, the smooth surface of the earthfill was
roughened by a CAT 825 sheepsfoot compactor and wetted to ensure that the LPSL
would adhere to the cell floor.
Vector Engineering, Inc. • 143E Spring Hill Drive•Grass Valley, CA 95945•(530)272-2448
-10-
