® enable the landfill to maintain compliance with regard to sub-surface gas
migration.
In addition, a condensate management system was installed to handle
condensate that collects in the low points of the landfill gas extraction system
piping. Sump pump stations are utilized to transfer condensate from these low
points to a holding tank located at the flare station or to the leachate evaporation
ponds.
4.4.2 WATER QUALITY MONITORING SYSTEM
4.4.2.1 GROUNDWATER MONITORING
The current groundwater monitoring system at the landfill consists of
36 groundwater monitoring wells, which meet Detection Monitoring Program
(DMP) and CAP monitoring requirements. The first encountered groundwater is
measured approximately 60 to 80 feet below native ground surface.
As is more fully described in Section 2.6, a groundwater extraction system has
0 been installed to treat contaminated groundwater in the area of the former
Austin Road Landfill. The groundwater extraction system consists of two
groundwater extraction wells (EW-1 and EW-2) with a combined design capacity
of 305 gallons per minute (gpm). Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are
stripped from the extracted water and the treated water is used to artificially
recharge the shallow aquifer. The site is currently monitored in accordance with
WDR Order No. R5-2003-0049. Figure B shows the location of groundwater
monitoring and extraction wells.
4.4.2.2 SURFACE WATER MONITORING
The only surface water bodies in the vicinity of the site are the North and South
Creeks, which are tributary to the San Joaquin River. The North Creek flows
along the northern border of the landfill and the South Creek traverses the
southern portion of the site.
Noncontact surface water (stormwater that has not come in contact with refuse)
is directed to one of three onsite sedimentation basins. One pond is located in
Forward Landfill-Project Description 4-13 BRYAN A.STIRRAT&ASSOCIATES
(j:\Allied\Forward\2007.0018 Lateral Expansion\Reports\Proj Descrip\021308 Final Proj Des\Sec 4.doc:2/13/2008)
