6.0 Equipment Installation and Calibration
Shaw personnel will set up the samplers at each of the identified sampling locations. Once the
equipment is functioning properly, an air intake hose will be attached to each cassette base. The
cassette cap will be removed and the cassette will be positioned downward, perpendicular to the
wind. The power will be turned on and sampler pump will be switched on. The sampler will be
leak-checked before the start of the sampling event. A pre-test calibration with a flow meter will
be performed and the data on flow rate and pump specifications will be recorded. Shaw
personnel will monitor the samplers for fluctuations in the flow rate by means of rotameter and
visual inspections. At the end of the 8-hour sampling period, the sample pumps will be shut
down and a post-test calibration will be performed. The filter cassettes will be removed from the
sampler and placed in individual sealed plastic bags.
Shaw personnel will attach a COC and send the samples to ATEM. ATEM is an accredited
analytical laboratory for TEM analysis.
Shaw personnel will also gather the relevant concurrent average meteorological data(wind speed
and wind direction) from the landfill MET station.
Asbestos Sampler Calibration
This project will strive to meet the criteria for representativeness as promulgated by TEM
Method 7402 for asbestos sampling systems_ These criteria are as follows:
• An 8-hour representative data sample will be obtained at each of the four sites
indicated in this protocol.
• Equipment malfunctions will be minimized by equipment checks and inspections prior
to sampling by Shaw personnel. Equipment malfunctions are the greatest challenges to
meeting the project's representativeness goals.
• In order to acquire valid data, the sampler will be calibrated before and after the
sampling event.
• Each Sampler will be configured and duly calibrated prior to sampling. Shaw
personnel will follow the procedures in the sampler operation manual to set up and
initiate sampling.
• A pre-test calibration with a flow meter will be performed and the data on flow rate
and pump specifications will be recorded.
• During the sampling event, Shaw personnel will monitor the samplers for fluctuations
in the flow rate by means of rotameter and visual inspections.
