Final Construction Quality Assurance Report— WMU FU -13
Forward Landfill
5.0 GEOSYNTHETICS CQA
5.1 GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF ACTIVITIES
•
The geosynthetics components of WMU FU -13 consisted of geosynthetic clay liner (GCL), single -
side textured (SST) and double -side textured (DST) 60 -mil HDPE geomembrane; geocomposite;
cushion and filter geotextiles, geocomposite and geogrid. The installation and associated CCIA
provided for each of these components are discussed within the following sections.
5.2 GEOSYNTHETIC CLAY LINER (GCL)
5.2.1 General
The GCL product used in the construction of WMU FU -13 was Bentoliner manufactured by GSE.
This type of GCL material consists of granular bentonite encapsulated by two non -woven
geotextiles.
5.2.2 GCL Manufacture and Delivery
5.2.2.1 Receiving Inspection
Upon arrival by truck shipment, GLA's CQA Monitor observed the unloading and storage of the
GCL rolls. As each roll was unloaded from the delivery truck, the roll number was recorded in
the Receiving Logs, and then crosschecked with the manufacturer's quality control documents
(MQC Certifications) provided by the GCL manufacturer. These documents were reviewed by
GLA's Engineer of Record. Following this review, the material was approved for deployment. A
copy of the Receiving Logs and MQC certificates are included in Appendix H.
5.2.2.2 GCL Conformance Testing
The conformance testing on the GCL was performed by TRI. Conformance testing included the
following:
• hydraulic conductivity (ASTM D-5084);
• peel strength (ASTM D-4632, modified for 180 degree peel of GCL); and
interface shear strength (conducted by GLA).
A summary of the conformance test results is presented in Table 5. Interface shear testing was
conducted for the GCL/geomembrane/geocomposite interface. Results of the conformance
testing indicated that the materials met the requirements of the project specifications.
Detailed test results, including the GCL interface tests, are provided within Appendix H.
18 Geo -Logic
ASSOCIATES
