3.5 JOINING PIPE SECTIONS <br /> ® A. Pipes shall be joined to one another, to the polyethylene fittings, and to the flange <br /> connections by means of thermal butt-fusion. Polyethylene pipe lengths, fittings, <br /> and flanged connections to be joined by thermal butt-fusion shall be of the same <br /> type, grade, and class of polyethylene compound and supplied from the same raw <br /> material supplier. <br /> B. Butt-Fusion Joining: Butt-fusion of pipes and fittings shall be performed in <br /> accordance with the pipe manufacturer's recommendations as to equipment and <br /> technique. Depending on site conditions, butt-fusion joining shall be performed <br /> in or outside of the excavation at the EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR's option. <br /> 3.6 PLACEMENT IN LEACHATE COLLECTION TRENCH <br /> A. General: Care shall be exercised when lowering pipe into the trench to prevent <br /> damage or twisting of the pipe. <br /> B. Pipe Base: Pipe and fittings shall be laid directly on Coarse Gravel in leachate <br /> collection trench as shown on Construction Drawings. The trench bottom shall be <br /> carefully shaped to conform to the shape of the pipe and fittings for the bottom <br /> one-quarter of the pipe. <br /> C. Coarse Gravel Backfill: Backfill material shall be as specified in Section 02300, <br /> ® EARTHWORK, and shall be placed in accordance with that Section and as shown <br /> on the Construction Drawings. <br /> 3.7 CONNECTION AND REMOVAL OF LEACHATE COLLECTION PIPES <br /> A. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall develop a leachate management plan <br /> with the OWNER, DESIGN ENGINEER, and QA/QC CONSULTANT to address <br /> the control and containment of leachate during connection and removal of LCRS <br /> pipes and trenches. <br /> B. Connect existing and new perforated HDPE pipes using appropriate coupler. <br /> Extend filter geotextile and coarse gravel as necessary to connect LCRS trenches. <br /> Overlap filter geotextile a minimum 3-feet. <br /> 3.9 PROTECTION OF PIPE <br /> A. No construction traffic shall cross the pipe without sufficient cover as determined <br /> by the DESIGN ENGINEER. <br /> B. The EARTHWORK CONTRACTOR shall construct at least one temporary pipe <br /> crossing point within the WMU to provide access for necessary construction <br /> traffic. These temporary crossing points shall be located by the EARTHWORK <br /> CONTRACTOR and shall consist at a minimum of the completed Coarse Gravel <br /> and Granular Drainage Material Components, and a minimum of 2.5 feet of <br /> Forward Landfill WMU FU-14 <br /> 02535 4 LEACHATE PIPES <br />
