Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
3.0 AUSTIN UNIT
3.1 Water Quality Monitoring
3.1.1 Sampling and Laboratory Analyses
Del-Tech performed routine monitoring of DMP, CAP, EMP wells at the Austin Unit
during the first quarter 2015 monitoring period. Depth-to-water measurements were
recorded in the groundwater monitoring wells and groundwater, surface water, and
leachate sampling was performed on February 17 and 18, 2015.
Samples were collected from each sample point with sufficient liquid and submitted to
BC for analysis of the routine monitoring parameters stipulated in RWQCB Order No. 85-
2014-0006. Table 2-1 presents the monitoring schedule and summarizes the analytical
methods utilized during the current monitoring period. Wells AMW-1, AMW-7, AMW-
10, and AMW-13 were also sampled for total arsenic, nitrogen, iron, and manganese for
the CWLAM program. Water quality samples were also analyzed in the field for ORP,
turbidity, temperature, specific conductance, and pH and recorded on well data sheets.
The groundwater monitoring wells, surface water monitoring locations, and leachate
were sampled in accordance with the sampling and analysis plan detailed in Appendix D.
The well data sheets, raw laboratory data, certificates of analyses, and chain-of-custody
records related to the sampling program are included in Appendix E. Field and
laboratory analyses are summarized in Tables 3-1 through 3-8 and cumulative tabulated
data for all monitoring points and constituents for groundwater, unsaturated zone,
leachate, and surface water are presented in Appendix E.
3.1.2 QA/QC Results
The QA/QC program completed for the first quarter 2015 water quality monitoring
event at the Austin Unit included analyses of one trip blank, one field blank, one
equipment blank, laboratory method blanks, and one duplicate sample (well AMW-10).
The field, equipment, and trip blanks were analyzed for VOCs by EPA Method 8260 and
method blanks were analyzed for all required analyses. The results of the QA/QC
program indicate that acetone, t-butyl alcohol, DIPS, and ethyl t-butyl ether were
detected in the field blank sample. Inorganic constituents including calcium,
magnesium, sodium, and total kjeldahl nitrogen (used to calculate total nitrogen) were
measured at trace concentrations in method blanks. However, these constituents were
measured at very low concentrations that did not affect the interpretation of primary
sample results. Results from the duplicate groundwater sample collected from well
AMW-10 are presented along with the primary data in Table 3-2 yielded good
correlation with quantifiable constituents having a RPD less than 6 percent. Only
nitrate-N had a RPD above six percent (29 percent). Review of laboratory analysis dates
and required holding times indicates that with the exception of TKN, all samples were
submitted and analyzed within the required holding times during the first quarter 2015.
M:\2015.0014\FA 1Q15.docx 9
4/27/2015,Rev.0
