Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
determine the WQPS are presented in Table 3-4 are presented in Appendix G. As shown on 3-4,
no WQPS were exceeded during the fourth quarter 2017 monitoring period. Due to a lack of
data,WQPS will not be calculated for well AMW-31S until the fourth quarter 2018.
3.1.7 Domestic Well Monitoring
Two domestic wells (8106-A and 7898-A) were sampled on November 13, 2017. Table 3-5
summarizes the current analytical results for the domestic well samples collected.
Tetrachloroethene was measured above the PQL in both domestic well samples and acetone,
DCDFM, and TCE were also measured above their PQLs in the sample collected from well 8106-
A. Estimated trace concentrations of two VOCs (each) were also measured in the domestic well
samples.
3.1.8 Vadose Zone Monitoring
The current vadose-zone monitoring network at the Austin Unit consists of 14 lysimeters (10
suction lysimeters and four pan lysimeters). The lysimeter locations are shown on Figure 3-1.
As shown on Table 2-6A, all of the lysimeters were reported dry or had insufficient soil-pore
liquid (<_ 15 milliliters)for analysis.
3.1.9 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
For the Austin Unit, leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly by
Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the surface
impoundment WMU F (West) for evaporation. During the fourth quarter 2017, leachate was
observed at holding areas WMU FU-03, WMU FU-04, WMU FU-05, WMU FU-06, WMU FU-13,
and WMU FU-14 and a total of 170,750 gallons of leachate was removed from the lined areas at
an average rate of 1,856 gallons per day. For surface impoundment WMU-F (West) Freeboard
ranged from approximately 9.5 to 12.8 feet during the fourth quarter 2017 monitoring period.
Appendix A presents copies of the leachate observation logs, freeboard observation logs, and
surface impoundment monitoring log.
Leachate samples were collected on a quarterly basis and analyzed in the field for pH, specific
conductance, temperature, and turbidity. In addition to quarterly monitoring, leachate is
sampled annually during the fourth quarter monitoring period for the parameters listed in
Table 2-1. The results of quarterly field monitoring measurements and analytical results for the
fourth quarter 2017 are presented in Table 3-7. As shown on Table 3-7, 13 VOCs were detected
in the Austin Unit leachate sample.
Project No.5017.1030 I Water Quality Monitoring Report 12
January 2018
