Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
during the 2016 monitoring year indicates similar concentrations and no VOCs were detected
suggesting that landfill operations are not impacting surface water quality.
4.4.3 Leachate Monitoring
Leachate sumps are inspected for the presence of leachate and observations are recorded at
least weekly by Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump it is pumped into
the surface impoundment (WMU-F North) for evaporation. During the 2017 monitoring year,
leachate was observed at all of the holding areas except WMU D-87, WMU D-88 A/B, WMU-
D89 and according to the Operations Manager, no leachate was taken off site during the 2017
monitoring year. Freeboard at WMU-F North ranged from approximately 2.1 to 13.0 feet
during the 2017 monitoring year.
Value Engineering conducted a continuity test of the leachate collection and removal system
(LCRS) on August 11 and 12, 2017 at the Forward Unit (Appendix A). The tracer dye test results
indicate that continuity is present across the LCRS units WMU-F North, and no excessive
leachate is backed up in the drainage layer or sump of the LCRS units. Additionally, an annual
inspection of each sump was performed by Del-Tech on June 1, 2017. The results of the
inspection are included in Appendix A.
4.5 Austin Unit
4.5.1 Groundwater
Groundwater elevations measured during the 2017 monitoring year generally reflect seasonal
precipitation patterns. Hydrographs depicting historical groundwater elevations are presented
in Appendix G and indicate generally static trends. During the 2017 monitoring year
groundwater flow was generally directed to the north and northeast.
Groundwater quality conditions beneath the Austin Unit during the 2017 monitoring year are
generally similar to those observed in the previous monitoring year. The following table
summarizes inorganic CL exceedances for DMP wells during the 2017 monitoring year.
AUSTIN UNIT CL EXCEEDANCES FOR 2017 MONITORING YEAR
WELL CONSTITUENT 2017 MONITORING
PERIOD
AMW-6 Bicarbonate,Calcium,Magnesium, Nitrate, 1Q17
Potassium,Strontium
AMW-6 Bicarbonate,Calcium,Magnesium,Strontium 2Q17
AMW-7 Strontium
AMW-6 Bicarbonate,Calcium,Strontium 3Q17
AMW-12 Potassium
Project No.5017.1030 I Water Quality Monitoring Report 17
January 2018
