Water Quality Monitoring Report
Forward Landfill
calculated for CWLAM constituents (total nitrogen, arsenic, iron, and manganese). As shown on 3-
4, WQPS were exceeded for manganese in well AMW-10, and iron and manganese in wells
AMW-13 during the fourth quarter 2016 monitoring period. In a letter dated January 23, 2017,
the RWQCB was notified of the CWLARA CL exceedances and retesting is scheduled for January
2017.
3.1.7 Domestic Well Monitoring
Two domestic wells (8106-A and 7898-A) were sampled on October 26 and 27, 2016,
respectively. Table 3-5 summarizes the current analytical results for the domestic well samples
collected. Tetrachloroethene was measured above the PQL in both domestic well samples and
cis-1,2-DCE, DCDFM and TCE were also measured above their PQLs in the sample collected from
well 8106-A. Estimated trace concentrations of one VOC (each) were also measured in the
domestic well samples.
3.1.8 Vadose Zone Monitoring
The current vadose-zone monitoring network at the Austin Unit consists of seven lysimeters.
The lysimeter locations are shown on Figure 3-1. As shown on Table 2-5, with the exception of
FU -04W, all of the lysimeters were reported dry. However, there was insufficient soil -pore
liquid (4 milliliters) for analysis.
0
3.1.9 Leachate/Surface Impoundment Monitoring
For the Austin Unit, leachate sumps and surface impoundments are inspected weekly by
Forward Landfill personnel. If leachate is detected in a sump, it is pumped into the surface
impoundment WMU F (West) for evaporation. During the fourth quarter 2016, leachate was
observed at holding areas WMU FU -03, WMU FU -04, WMU FU -05, WMU FU -06, WMU FU -13,
and WMU FU -14 and a total of 358,200 gallons of leachate was removed from the lined areas at
an average rate of 3,936 gallons per day. For surface impoundment WMU-F (West) Freeboard
ranged from approximately 7.33 to 7.67 feet during the fourth quarter 2016 monitoring period.
Appendix A presents copies of the leachate observation logs, freeboard observation logs, and
surface impoundment monitoring log.
Leachate samples were collected on a quarterly basis and analyzed in the field for pH, specific
conductance, temperature, and turbidity. In addition to quarterly monitoring, leachate is
sampled annually during the fourth quarter monitoring period for the parameters listed in
Table 2-1. The results of quarterly field monitoring measurements and analytical results for the
fourth quarter 2016 are presented in Table 3-7. As shown on Table 3-7, six VOCs were detected
in the Austin Unit leachate sample.
Project No. 2016.0007 1 Water Quality Monitoring Report 13
January 2017
