be left at curbside for pick up by refuse collectors, or
taken to County drop-off centers by self -haulers will
provide clean compostable materials that will be taken to
regional compost facilities.
Transformation will be used as necessary to divert
tires, waste wood and other waste types which can be used
as fuel to conserve landfill space and replace virgin
fuels until markets are developed for higher uses for
those resources.
D. How the Components Jointly Achieve Diversion Mandates:
The various diversion strategies proposed by the
County will work together to enable the County to achieve
its waste diversion goals of 25% by 1995 and 50% by the
year 2000. The quantities and percentages of the total
waste stream for the materials diverted are given in
Table 10-1.
The waste generation component and the special waste
component discussed the current waste diversion
strategies for the special waste types of scrap metals,
cannery wastes, and inert materials. According to
current interpretation of regulations and legislation
concerning the ACT, current diversion activities for
these materials may count toward meeting waste diversion
goals if they were found in significant quantities in the
waste stream and if diversion programs existed in
January, 1990. These waste types meet the criteria in
that they were found in the waste disposal stream in
significant quantities, diversion programs did exist in
January, 1990, and the County took direct and/or indirect
action to encourage removal of these wastes from the
waste disposal stream.
Chapter 10 - Integration 9
H
