M. Waste Categories Targeted for Source Reduction:
A. Yard Waste:
The County will provide a curbside collection of yard
wastes for composting, as discussed in the compost
component. Source reduction strategies that will enhance
this program will include encouragement for homeowners to
switch to low maintenance type lawns and shrubbery when
practical. The County will also provide information on
backyard composting of yard wastes.
Residents and businesses will be urged to leave their
grass clippings on their lawns as mulch. This source
reduction approach adds nutrients to the lawns and reduces
the quantity of yard waste to be composted. The composting
of nitrogen-rich grass clippings requires frequent turning
and monitoring to prevent odor problems caused by anaerobic
decomposition, increasing the cost of composting projects.
The County's practice has been and continues to be to leave
grass clippings on park areas. Grass catchers are only
used around buildings where there is a safety concern with
flying debris. The thriving green park areas should lend
credence to the education campaign to urge residents to
leave their grass clippings on their lawns.
B. Paper and Packaging:
Suggestions will be provided to homes and businesses
on how to use paper more efficiently thereby reducing paper
in the waste stream. Homeowners and businesses will be
urged to purchase products and produce products with the
least unnecessary packaging.
