Following are the short-term and medium-term planning <br /> objectives that have been developed to meet these <br /> strategies. <br /> I. Encourage the continuation of existing strategies that <br /> will reduce the waste stream by 0.4% during the short- <br /> term, and expand existing strategies to reduce 0.8% of <br /> the waste stream during the medium-term planning <br /> periods. <br /> 2. Evaluate and implement by January, 1994, variable can <br /> rates where practical, that will reduce the waste <br /> stream by 0.4% during the short term and 0.5% during <br /> the medium-term planning period. <br /> 3 . During the short-term planning period, establish a <br /> public education program that will continue through <br /> the medium-term planning period, that provides <br /> information to householders and businesses concerning <br /> reducing the use of non-recyclable materials, <br /> replacing disposable materials and products with <br /> reusable materials and products, purchasing repairable <br /> products, purchasing products with the least <br /> unnecessary packaging, and minimizing the amount of <br /> yard waste generated. <br /> 4. Develop and implement a yard waste reduction program <br /> that will reduce the waste stream by 0.2% during the <br /> short-term, and 0.5% during the medium-term planning <br /> periods. <br /> 5. Encourage new source reduction activities with <br /> government institutions and businesses that reduce the <br /> waste stream by 0. 3% during the short-term, and 0.5% <br /> during the medium-term planning periods. <br /> Chapter 3 - Source Reduction 3 <br />
