Ci
■ Then leachate from Module 3 is pumped until pumping stops or until the leachate tank is
full.
■ Tank level is determined by observing the fluid level from port at top of tank.
Module 4
Facilities
The leachate facilities for Module 4 include:
■ Sump with dedicated pump for Module 4
■ Volumetric flow meter for the leachate sump pump, indicating total gallons pumped and
instantaneous flow rate
Ci
n.
n
0
■ A 10,000 gallon leachate storage tank
■ Transfer pump (to fill water trucks, if needed)
■ Return Pump (to pump leachate back to one of the Modules allowed to receive leachate,
if needed)
Operation
Leachate drains by gravity to the Module 4 sump, from which it is either pumped to the 10,000 -
gallon storage tank or directly to the landfill refuse per the WDRs. The sump pump operates
automatically, based on leachate levels within the sump. The leachate pump intake is located 24
inches above the floor of the sump to avoid pulling soil from sump into the pump. Control
points for the pump are:
Indicated Depth
inches
Actual Depth
inches
Pump Off: 8
32
Pum On: 18
42
High Level Alarm: 24
48
Operation of the pump is conditional upon sufficient water in the sump and available capacity in
the leachate tank. The high level alarm is set to alarm at the upper lip of the sump, thus alerting
the operators before the one -foot leachate limit is exceeded at the Module floor beyond the sump.
The leachate storage tank is steel, of double -walled construction. The tank is provided with two
sensors:
! A high level sensor, which will activate an alarm and deactivate the sump pump if the
leachate level exceeds a set level. This feature prevents the overflow of the tank.
■ A low level sensor, which deactivates the transfer and return pumps, thus preventing
either of those pumps from being operated with insufficient water.
North County RCSL 11 Public Works/Solid Waste
2nd Semester and Annual 2005 Groundwater Monitoring County of San Joaquin — January 24, 2006
