1 3.03 PIPE BEDDING <br />0 <br />F. After placing of trench backfill has been started, the Contractor shall proceed with <br />densification. Backfill shall be mechanically compacted by means of tamping <br />rollers, sheepsfoot rollers, pneumatic tire rollers, vibrating rollers, or other <br />Imechanical tampers. Jetting is not permitted unless otherwise indicated.. <br />North County LPG Collection System 4 TRENCHING AND EXCAVATION <br />San Joaquin County Public Works Section 02225 <br />A. <br />The trench bottom shall be smooth and free of rocks and/or refuse material. As <br />indicated in the Drawings, clean sand or pea gravel bedding shall be placed below <br />and around the pipe as a cushion and for protection from pipe damage. <br />B. <br />sal be laced evenly and carefully around and over <br />The pipe bedding material shall p y y <br />the pipe to support the bottom half of the pipe. <br />C. <br />Each layer of the pipe bedding material shall be thoroughly and carefully <br />compacted in the presence of the Engineer until the required depth exists. <br />3.04 TRENCH BACKFILL <br />A. <br />Use only approved fill materials for required backfill. Excavated soils will be <br />approved if they meet the requirements of Section 2.02. <br />B. <br />Selection and Placing of Trench Backfill: Preparation of fill areas, and selection <br />and placing of trench backfill materials will be observed and tested by the County. <br />Notify the County 24 hours in advance of filling operations to permit required <br />testing. The cost of observation and testing will be borne by the County. <br />C. <br />Backfill soil is available at the site for the contractors use at his cost at a location <br />directed by the Engineer. <br />D. <br />The Contractor shall place trench backfill material in 12 -inch loose lifts, moisture <br />condition and compact it to a minimum of 90 percent of the maximum density as <br />determined by ASTM Test Method D1557-78 and at 0-3 percent above optimum <br />moisture content. Compaction shall be achieved by using sheepsfoot or vibrating <br />rollers. Heavy impact type equipment such as stompers shall not be permitted for <br />compaction above pipes. <br />E. <br />The Contractor shall over fill for settlement an additional 2 inches of backfilled <br />material as shown on drawings. <br />0 <br />F.
