Operation
Leachate drains by gravity to the sumps of Module 1 and 3, and is removed by manually
activating the sump pumps. Once a pump is activated, pumping continues until the selected
sump is "dry", causing an automatic shutdown by a sensor on the pump electrical current.
Module 1 and 3 leachate sump pumps are operated at least two days per week. Often the sump
pumps are operated daily at the discretion of facility staff.
Leachate from Modules 1 and 3 is pumped to the leachate storage tank. The tank discharge
pump operates automatically, turning on and off based on the float sensor within the tank to
maintain the tank level between 1/2 and 2/3 full. If the leachate level in the tank reaches a "high-
level" alarm sensor, then the leachate sump pumps are deactivated, preventing overflow of the
tank.
The tank discharge pump returns the leachate to the landfill at a horizontal LFG collector in refuse
now approximately 10 feet below the landfill surface of Module 3 (approximate elevation 160
NGVD). Approximately 70 feet of refuse in multiple lifts is in place below this collector. Other
infusion points over Module 3 or other Subtitle D liners may be used.
Facilities
The leachate facilities for Module 4 include:
• Sump with dedicated pump in Module 4.
• Volumetric flow meter for the leachate sump pump, indicating total gallons pumped and
instantaneous flow rate.
• A 10,000 -gallon leachate storage tank, provided with a float switch, which activates
alarms based on high or low level conditions.
• Transfer pump, which can deliver leachate from the storage tank into a water truck if
needed.
■ Return Pump to pump leachate from the tank back to one of the Subtitle D Modules, if
needed.
Operation
Leachate drains by gravity to the Module 4 sump, from which it returned to the refuse. Additional
infusion areas are constructed in Module 4 as needed.
Module 1-3 LCRS Pump Control Upgrade2 North County Recycling Center and Sanitary Landfill
May 26, 2010 San Joaquin County
