Soil samples for logging and testing will be collected by driving a
modified California split-spoon sampler having a 2-inch-inside-
diameter and a 2.5-inch-outside-diameter. The sampler will be lined
with 2-inch-diameter,. stainless steel , thin-walled rings. The sampler
will be driven 18 inches into the undisturbed soil at each sampling
interval before advancing the borehole with the drill bit. Soil
samples from the shallow borings will be collected by driving the
sampler into the soil using a 140-pound hammer dropping an average of
30 inches. The sampler will be pushed into the soil in advance of the
drill bit on the deeper borings. -
After the sampler is driven and withdrawn from the hole, both ends of
the stainless steel rings will be wrapped with Teflon. Polypropylene
caps will be placed over the Teflon to seal the, rings. The rings will
be placed in glass jars and labeled. All samples will be immediately
placed in an ice chest and maintained at 4°C with frozen gel packs.
Upon sample collection, chain-of-custody documentation will be initi-
ated. This document will accompany the samples to the laboratory. At
the laboratory, EMCON personnel will accept the samples by signing the
chain-of-custody document and assigning a unique number to each
sample. Plate B-1 shows a typical soil analysis request form. Other
representative samples for geologic logging will be retained in
plastic bags.
FQi„ment Cleaning.
Boring equipment, including augers, drill rods, drill bits, and drive
samplers, will be steam cleaned before starting operations at each
boring to prevent possible cross-contamination between borings. In
addition, the drive samplers will be washed in a trisodium phosphate
detergent solution and rinsed after each sample interval to prevent
A possible cross-contamination between drives. After sampling, soil
borings that are not converted to monitoring wells will be backfilled
with a cement-bentonite grout.
PJ9 9390313.000 -
