G
Through use of landfill compactors, initial compacted refuse densities
of 1,200 pounds per cubic yard have been attained in the Corral Hollow
site, and further densification has occurred due to surcharge loading
by successive refuse lifts. In addition, operational controls result
in a relatively uniform fill (no waste segregation). Although that
factor and the high density will tend to minimize differential settle-
ment within the landfill, significant settlements of the total refuse
thickness can be anticipated.
Since disposal operations have been conducted at the Corral Hollow
site for approximately 20 years, much of the refuse placed at the site
has already settled. Although future settlement can be anticipated,
it should be relatively uniform. The landfill configuration should
remain intact. The minimum final surface slopes, shown on Drawing 1,
were designed to accommodate drainage of the completed landfill, given
minor differential settlement conditions. To protect the final
cover's integrity, the area will be periodically observed and main-
tained.
FINAL COVER
The final cover will be placed when the refuse fill areas are at final
grade. The final cover should be constructed by spreading the speci-
fied type of soil in uniform layers not over 8 inches thick. Each
soil layer should be watered or dried as needed to bring the soil as
close as practicable to the optimum moisture content, and then com-
pacted with suitable equipment to at least 90 percent relative compac-
tion (ASTM Test Designation D1557-70).
At a minimum, the final cover will consist of the following:
• A 2 -foot -thick (minimum) compacted soil final cover
foundation layer (1 foot placed as intermediate cover)
• A 1 -foot -thick (minimum) compated low -permeability soil
layer (permeability of 1 x 10- cm/sec or less) over the
foundation
PJ9 9390310.00D 15
cmrnn Gce^i4e
