Plastic bottles and caps used in sampling for metals shall be soaked overnight in a I percent
nitric acid solution. The bottles and caps shall then be triple rinsed with deionized water, and
air dried before being used at the site. All plastic bottles and caps shall be constructed of linear
polyethylene or polypropylene. Plastic bottles and caps shall be used only once and discarded
after analysis is complete.
Plastic bottles and caps used in sampling for general water-quality parameters are not routinely
washed. They are used only once and discarded after analysis is complete.
Before starting the sampling event, all equipment that will be used will be disassembled and
cleaned thoroughly with a non-phosphate detergent(such as Alconox9)water, then steam cleaned
with deionized water. Any parts that may absorb contaminants, such as plastic pump bladders,
check vales, etc., shall be cleaned as described above or replaced. The inside surfaces of
positive displacement(bladder) pump tubing shall be cleaned by heating the tubing overnight at
120°C with a low-flow, inert air source. Once the bladder pump is cleaned and reassembled,
a pump blank will be collected by pumping organic-free water through the bladder pump
assembly. The pump effluent will be sampled and analyzed by EPA Method 8010/8020. The
pump effluent analysis must be below the method reporting limit for each parameter before the
pump is used at the site for sample collection.
Surface Compost]Leachate Sampling
If sufficient flow is observed, compost leachate samples shall be collected with a dipper, or
bailer consistent with the procedures listed in Section 9 of Test Methods for Evaluating Solid
Waste: Physical/ cal Methods (SW-846, 3rd edition, November 1986). If low-flow
conditions are encountered, ether a disposable syringe or a stainless steel scoop will be used to
collect samples. A disposable plastic syringe will be used for collecting samples without
disturbing bottom sediment in very shallow water conditions. In low-flow conditions, the flat
bottom of a stainless steel scoop will be pressed against the bank and the water will flow with
minimum disturbance into the scoop. Compost leachate samples collected shall be transferred
into the appropriate sample containers. Compost leachate samples shall be filtered as required.
Grab Compost Leachate SampHng
If compost leachate samples are required from the evaporation, grab samples will be collected
using a stainless steel bomb sampler from the leachate outfall as appropriate. Leachate samples
shall be filtered as required and transferred into the appropriate containers.
I_WQnDCr0VAMPMC1-4.TCY D-2 Novemba 23,1993
