D L Il 11 TABLE 4.3.2 Five -Year Accident Summary (1989 - 1993) - MacArthur Drive at Linne Road All sevaa four accidents over the past five years involved right angle collisions where one vehicle pulled out in front of an on -coming vehicle. As Table 4.3.2 indicates, none of the accidents resulted in fatalities or property damage. These types of accidents usually occur as a result of driver decision and are difficult to prevent through traffic engineering improvements. Public Transit Public transit does not currently serve the project area. The rural agricultural and rural residential land uses of the project area cannot generate enough trips to economically maintain bus service. According to the San Joaquin County General Plan, bus service at one-hour headways requires a minimum residential density of at least four dwelling units per acre. Given this criteria and land use plans that intend to maintain the project area in a relatively rural state, future transit service in this area is unlikely. However. intercitv passenger rail service is targeted for implementation in 1996 on the Union Pacific tracks in the proiect area. While no stops are planned in the immediate project area, a station site is proposed at the intersection of Corral Hollow_ Road and Linne Road. Bicycles and Pedestrians Field visits during this study revealed minimal bicycle and pedestrian activity in the vicinity of the project. This observation is consistent with the rural land uses of the area that do not tend to attract or produce bicycle and pedestrian trips due to long travel distances. In support of this explanation is the fact that less than 10 students at Jefferson Elementary walk or bicycle to school according to school officials.
