File No. 20-1008-36
May 20, 1996
FIELD COMPACTION TEST RESULTS
A total of 281 nuclear field density tests (designated 1 through 281) were performed on the
foundation and barrier layers between June 7, 1995 to April 9, 1996. Results of all tests were
verbally reported to Mr. Gabriel Karam of San Joaquin County and Granite Construction and
are shown on Table VI, attached. In addition, 16 sand cone density tests (designated SC-1
through SC-16)were also performed at the site between November 8, 1995 to March 19, 1996,
and are also shown on Table VI.
In-place density and moisture content for Test Numbers 1 through 281 were performed in
general accordance with ASTM Test Methods D-2922 and D-3017, respectively (nuclear probe
tests method). In-place moisture contents for Test Numbers SC-1 through SC-16 were
evaluated in general accordance with ASTM Test Method D-2216 (oven-dried test method).
The sand cone density tests were performed in general accordance with ASTM Test Method D-
1556. Holes in the barrier layer due to testing were backfilled with commercially available
powder form bentonite clay.
A summary of field density tests consisting of test designations and location, in-place dry
densities and moisture contents, laboratory-obtained maximum dry densities and optimum
moisture content, and specified and achieved relative compaction is shown on Table VI,
attached. Random bulk samples of the foundation and barrier materials tested were acquired in
the field, sealed, and brought to our laboratory for determination of the maximum density-
optimum moisture content in general accordance with ASTM Test Method D-1557 "A, B, or
C." Sample frequency was in general accordance with the CQA plan. Laboratory compaction
curves are presented on Plates 3 through 22 and are summarized in Table V.
PERMEABILITY TESTING
Thirteen block samples for permeability tests were acquired from the barrier layer after
compaction requirements were achieved. Granite personnel used a John Deere 31OD backhoe
equipped with 12-inch bucket or hand tools to cut out the block samples. After samples were
acquired, barrier layer holes were backfilled with red clay and properly compacted.
Samples were sealed in the field to prevent moisture loss and were transported to our laboratory
for hand carving and testing. Laboratory permeability tests were performed in general
accordance with ASTM D-5084 test method. Sample Nos. 1 through 12 were performed on the
sideslopes and 13 on the flat top portion. Test locations are shown graphically on Plate 2.
Results of these tests and their respective locations in northings and eastings are presented on
Table IV below.
20-1008-36/MR960031 Page 5 of 7 01996 Kleinfelder,Inc.
