File No. 20-1008-36
July 14, 1995
4 SOIL STOCKPILE
4.1 STOCKPILE INVESTIGATION
Kleinfelder performed laboratory tests on the stockpile of proposed liner material at the Granite
plant in Fall 1994. We concluded that a majority of the stockpile material does not exhibit the
quality or"cushion" needed to construct the barrier layer unless admixtures are used.
Kleinfelder was retained by the SJDPW to further investigate the currently available Granite
stockpile soils and to design a mix for producing the soil needed to construct the barrier layer.
The design approach for the project is to blend red clay soil from Granite Construction's Tracy,
California plant, or Ione clay as an alternative, with Granite stockpile soils to meet the
requirements of Chapter 15 for the barrier layer soil. See Section 2.4 for a detailed description of
the mix design.
4.2 CONSTRUCTION METHODS
The soil for the final cover, both red or Ione clay amendment and stockpile materials, will be
transported from Granite's Tracy plant or Ione, respectively, by truck to the area of placement or
the mixing area for the barrier layer material. Additional information on construction methods is
contained in Section 6.2.2.
GSM•md CH195 Page 17 of 31 July 14,1995
20-1008-36(CQACOP) Copyright 1995,Kleinfelder,Inc.
