directed into the appropriate containers. Each filter was used once and
discarded.
When a bladder pump was used to collect samples for dissolved con-
stituents, the samples were filtered by attaching a disposable 0.45-micron
acrylic copolymer filter directly to the pump effluent line with a pressure fit-
ting. As the pump cycled, the effluent was pressured through the filter and
directed into the appropriate containers. Each filter was used once and
discarded.
Spring (or Surface-water) Sampling
If sufficient flow was observed, spring (or surface-water) samples were
collected with a dipper consistent with the procedures listed in Section 9 of
the document entitled Test Methods for Evaluating Solid Waste:
Physi-cal/Chemical Methods, SW-846, 3rd edition, November 1986. If low-flow
conditions were encountered, a stainless steel scoop was used to collect
samples. The flat bottom of the scoop was pressed against the bank and
the water flowed with little disturbance into the scoop. Samples collected
with a dipper or scoop were transferred into the appropriate sample con-
tainers. Spring (or surface-water) samples were filtered as required.
Sample r i lin
The following section specifies sample containers, preservation methods,
and sample handling procedures.
Sample Containers and Preservation
Sample containers vary with each type of analytical parameter. Container
' types and materials were selected to be nonreactive with the particular
analytical parameter tested. Specific sample volume, container types, and
preservation requirements are presented in Table A-1.
Sample Handling
Sample containers were labeled immediately following collection. Samples
were kept cool with cold packs until received by the laboratory. Cold packs
were replaced each day to maintain refrigeration. At the time of sampling,
each sample was logged on a Sampling and Analysis Chain-of-Custody
Record (see Figure A-3) that accompanied the sample to the laboratory.
pj9\939\9390111 c A-5 Rev. 0 September 9, 1992
i
