5.1.2.2 TREATMENT- CARBON FILTERS
Description: Gas leaving the landfill through the passive system can be treated using activated
carbon filters. The carbon filters remove organics, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
Filters will be connected in-series between the high permeability collection device (well or
trench) and the vent to the atmosphere. The filters will remove the VOCs from the landfill gas
allowing the methane, a non-regulated gas, to be released into the atmosphere while
simultaneously releasing the pressure from within the landfill.
Short-term and Long-term Effectiveness: Effective immediately. Effective long term solution
yielding permanent removal of contaminants from the site; spent carbon is transported to an
offsite permitted regeneration facility where contaminants are removed from the carbon and
destroyed.
Implementabilitx: Fairly easy to implement as part of the treatment system. Modular
component that are placed in series using quick-connect fittings.
Cost: Low-Medium
5.1.3 ACTIVE GAS COLLECTION
Description: Active systems restrict subsurface migration of landfill gas using mechanical means
to alter pressure gradients and redirect subsurface gas flow. Recovery of landfill gas is only
possible with an active system. A common active system construction consists of a group of
extraction wells placed around the landfill at a lateral spacing of approximately 100 to 300 ft
apart. An extraction vacuum withdraws the landfill gas, in the horizontal and vertical directions,
from the wells and pushes the collected landfill gas through a free vent, waste-gas burner, or
other applicable treatment technology. Because of the elevated methane concentrations, all
equipment would be rated for use in potentially explosive atmospheres.
Short-term and Long-term Effectiveness: There may be a short-term impact to workers drilling
through the landfill. Effective for long-term collection of gas either directly through the landfill or
through the subsurface adjacent to the landfill. With proper management, removes most risk
from the landfill gas.
Implementability: Fairly easy to implement as part of existing cap.
Cost: Medium.
5.1.3.1 TREATMENT—CARBON FILTERS
As stated in Section 5.1.2.2, activated carbon filters can also be used in combination with an
active gas collection system to treat the landfill gas as it is being released. In a similar manner,
as previously described, granular activated carbon canisters would be connected in series
between the extraction system and the vent to atmosphere.
11 IMT M/LLER ONVOKAF
iAw.
P:\707 Cove Contractors\Feasibility Study and Corrective Action Plan\Corrective Action Plan_Final.doc
