Short-term and Long-term Effectiveness: Effective immediately. Effective long term solution
yielding permanent removal of contaminants from the site; spent carbon is transported to an
offsite permitted regeneration facility where contaminants are removed from the carbon and
destroyed.
Implementability: Fairly easy to implement as part of the treatment system. Modular component
that is placed in series using quick-connect fittings.
Cost: Medium-High.
5.1.3.2 TREATMENT - THERMAL (FLARES)
Description: Enclosed ground flares are the most commonly used form of technology when the
thermal destruction of landfill gas is required. Enclosed ground flare systems include a flame
enclosure (or stack) with a burner assembly at the base and a pilot light near the waste-gas
burner head. Air dampers are utilized at the base to control dilution air. Landfill gas can be
mixed with a supplemental fuel if required to support combustion, then the gas is fed through
the burner assembly at the base of the stack and combustion takes place within the enclosure.
The pilot light at burner assembly ignites the waste.
Short-term and Lona-term Effectiveness: No significant impact during installation. Long-term
effective means of managing and treating collected landfill gas.
Implementability: Easy to implement as part of an existing cap.
Cost: High.
12 A!/LLEN MWOOKS
STne.
P:\707 Cove Contractors\Feasibility Study and Corrective Action Plan\Corrective Action Plan_Final.doc
