CHAPTER 12.0
BIOTICS
A. Environmental Setting
The project site consists of the existing transfer facility, agricultural row crops to the
west, and fallow, weedy ground to the north. (Refer to Figure 4-2) Adjacent vegetation
consists primarily of non-native grasses and weeds. Ground squirrels have been
observed in the project area.
A biotics site survey was conducted on the site and did not identify plant or animal
species of concern. (Refer to Appendix I: Biotics Survey)
B. Environmental Impacts
The project site (including the existing transfer facility and agricultural area) is not
conducive to rare or endangered species. The biotics survey concludes that the project
would not have a significant impact on wildlife.
ISSUE: Presence of Squirrels,Rats and Flies
Due to the nature of solid waste handling activities, squirrels, rats and flies are attracted
to the existing facility. This activity is currently conducted in an open area without
benefit of a controlled environment. The proose expansion project ill ring the
solid waste handling operation into an enclose building for which vector controls can
be established.
Significance: Potentially Significant.
Mitigation:
12-1. Confine the waste handling operation to the Transfer
Building. All doors, windows, and unscreened openings
should remain closed unless actually in use.
12-2. Contract with a pest control company to provide pest
control services around the perimeter of the building as
necessary.
Significance After Mitigation: Not Significant.
12-1
