Pallets will. be stockpiled outside in yard .
Pieces of wood and scram iron will be separated into their
respective 40-yd . containers outside . A balm. machine
will bale cardboard and tin cans for storage either in shad
or in yard. As each 80-yd. load of recyclable material is
made up it will be hauled off to markets in the valley or
overseas ,
Of the maximum yardage of waste packaging hauled into
the facility daily, there is the following estimated break-
down: 400 yds . hauled in reduces to about 40 yds . segra-
gated and baled material and 10 yds . unusable material for
the landfill .
Landfill : a sanitary landfill is , b-y definition , an
method of disposing of solid waste on land by
engineered
spreading the waste in relatively thin layers , compacting
it to the smallest practical volume and covering it with soil
at the end of each working day . Further, there is no burning
of solid caste at a sanitary landfill . The landfill is gen-
erally located in such a manner that any water run-off will
collect and be retained in a reservoir. The day-to-day
operation of a landfill depends on the type of terrain in
which the landfill is located . The landfill proposed by
the F.W. Cattle Co. will l)e pit type operation and is de-
signed to be a Class II-1 facility (see appendix) . The nit
is started by excavating a portion large enough to effic-
iently operate the equip,nent . . . .approximately 80 feet by
150 feet , and 10 to 12 feet deep . The excavated soil is
stockpiled for use later. The waste is dumped into the pit
and compacted by a piece of heavy equipment , generally a
bulldozer. Soil is then excavated from the opposite end of
the pit and that soil is placed over the compacted waste .
This method enables the pit to be enlarged as it is being
filled. Under normal circumstances the waste is covered at
the end of each w orhinn daV. The soil cover prevents
rodents , insects and birds from being attracted to the waste .
Eventually the area will reach its capacity. At that time
all stockpiled soil is spread evenly over the area of the pit
to match the surrounding area as much as possible and planted
with sufficient ground cover and shrubs to prevent erosion.
Generally, public landfills consist of primarily house-
hold waste products which include both organic and inorganic
material. The proposed project by F.W. Cattle Co. will be
somewhat different in that there will be no household gar-
bage and a minimum of wet wastes . F.W. Cattle Co. provides
a complete solid waste disposal service to some of the can-
neries in the Sun Joaquin valley and to a number of other
industries ( see appendix) . The service consists of the col-
lection, by a salvage company, of all wet and dry wastes
generated by the industries. Most of the wet wastes , processed
- ! 3 -
