DISPOSAL PLAN
Peralta Farming Company, Inc. plans to dispose of liquid waste(no mud)from the Heinz
Tracy tomato canning facility.
Spreading will be done with a water truck on a 130 acre parcel of agricultural land.
MATERIAL
The "waste" is a liquid mixture of tomato serum and wash water.
1. Tomato Serum
Processing tomatoes are transported from a grower's field to the cannery in
fiberglass tubs. In transit, some tomatoes are crushed, breaking the
skin of the tomato and releasing serum(juice)from the locules(cavities).
Tomato serum is 100 per cent natural liquid. It is neither toxic
nor hazardous.
2. Wash Water
In the process of inspecting tomatoes to determine acceptability for
processing, State(Processing Tomato Advisory Board)inspectors wash
the sample. The wash water is collected with the serum.
DISPOSAL
At the cannery, the serum is drained from the tomato tubs just prior to the tomatoes being
unloaded. At one time, the serum and wash water passed into the city sewer, along with
other liquid waste from the plant. Now the serum and wash water are kept separate so
that the liquid does not go into the sewer.
Disposal of serum is a problem for the city of Tracy sewage plant. It is a problem because
the serum contains organic matter with a BOD requirement. Aeration(oxygenation)is
expensive for the city and there is limited capacity.
The best and least expensive method to dispose of organic matter(BOD)is to spread the
liquid thinly over the ground to fully expose it to air and sunlight.
Plans are being developed for the city to acquire agricultural land near the sewer plant
specifically for cannery waste. In the meanwhile, we need this proposed site to help with
the BOD situation.
PRESENT DISPOSAL
Peralta presently collects serum and wash water in a water truck and hauls the material
from the Tracy Heinz plant to an approved site west of Stockton(Roberts Road). This is
the same site Heinz uses to dispose of wet waste from both Tracy and Stockton. A large
plastic tank is available at the Tracy plant to collect the material while the truck is
spreading.
