TARGET <br /> E) <br /> Waste Classification/Segregation Summary <br /> Target uses a third party company called the WERCs to classify the hazardous waste characteristics and chemical <br /> compatibility of all products that will be sold at Target stores. The WERCs uses SDS sheets along with ingredient levels <br /> to classify each retail product based on EPA/State waste identification and chemical compatibility. After the classification <br /> is completed,the WERCs assigns a Target"smart-sort"label designation to each product to ensure proper chemical <br /> compatibility during storage. <br /> WERCs Portal—Waste Determination Lookup by Product <br /> The link below can be used to lookup products to see the EPA and State waste determination, SDS, and"smart-sort" <br /> designation. <br /> Online Portal: WERCs Item Search Database <br /> Username: Target <br /> Password: t@rget <br /> "Smart-Sort" Category Definitions <br /> FL—Flammable/Aerosol/Toxic <br /> • Meets any of the following properties: <br /> o Aerosol products <br /> o Compressed gas/Propane/Lighter fluid <br /> o Flashpoint<140°F(60°C) <br /> o Matches,charcoal, fireworks,or other flammable solids(as defined in RCRA under characteristic of <br /> ignitability) <br /> o Meets RCRA characteristic of Toxicity(D004-D043) <br /> o Sole active ingredient listed on the U-List or P-List(e.g.,nicotine,methanol, acetone) <br /> • Examples: Hair spray,windshield washer fluid, dry erase markers,ping pong balls,nicotine patches/gum, <br /> vitamins,hand sanitizers,nail polish,waterproof mascara,perfume/cologne, insect repellent, and weed killer <br /> containing 2,4-D <br /> • NOTE: The RCRA D001 Ignitability exclusion for waste products containing less than 24%should not be <br /> applied with respect to assigning the FL waste type attribute. <br /> O—Oxidizer <br /> • Meets any of the following: <br /> o The product as a whole is classified as Oxidizer or Organic Peroxide by DOT (Class 5)(liquid or solid) <br /> o The product as a whole is classified as an Oxidizer Class 1 through 4 for the International Fire Code(IFC) <br /> /NFPA(National Fire Protection Association) <br /> • Examples: Pool chemicals,hydrogen peroxide, OxiClean®products,and hair color kits(containing peroxide <br /> developer) <br /> CA—Corrosive-Acidic <br /> • Meets any of the following: <br /> o pH is less than or equal to 2(liquid or solid) <br /> o Lead-acid batteries or equipment containing lead-acid batteries <br /> o Meets definition of corrosivity per federal waste regulations(D002)because of corrosivity to steel and pH <br /> is acidic(less than 7) <br /> o If no pH information is available,product contains a strong acid(i.e.,hydrochloric acid,muriatic acid, <br /> sulfuric acid,etc.) at greater than 10 percent and is incompatible with alkaline materials(bases) <br /> • Examples: Tarnish remover, CLR®, and toilet bowl cleaner without bleach <br /> Updated September 2016 <br />
