TARGET
E)
CB—Corrosive-Basic
• Meets any of the following:
o pH is greater than or equal to 12 (liquid or solid)
o Contains bleach(sodium hypochlorite)
o Meets definition of corrosivity per federal waste regulations(D002)because of corrosivity to steel and pH
is alkaline(greater than 7)
o If no pH information is available, product contains a strong alkaline(base)(i.e., calcium hypochlorite,
sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, etc.) at greater than 10 percent and is incompatible with acids
• Examples: Bleach,household cleaners containing bleach,drain cleaners, oven cleaners,toilet bowl cleaner,hair
relaxers, and hair removers
E—Electronics Recyclin
• Meets any of the following:
• Electronics product(e.g.,television,radio, GPS,videogame system, etc.)
• Product contains circuit board(e.g.,blinking lights or making sounds)
• Refrigerators,air conditioners,and dehumidifiers
• Battery-containing equipment(e.g.,toys, cordless toothbrushes)
• Printer ink/toner cartridges that are eligible for recycling program(At this time, all retail printer ink/toner
cartridges may be included in Target's electronics recycling program.)
• Contains LED light(s)
ST—State-Reaulated
• Non-food liquids and solids that are regulated as a state-only hazardous waste in California or Washington State.
• All non-food liquids that do not meet the criteria for any of the other ESIM waste type attributes(e.g., contact lens
solution, saline solution, snow globes)*
• Cooking oils (regulated for storage under the IFC)*
• Contains ammonia or ammonium compounds
• Examples: Shampoos/conditioners,body washes/shower gels,lotion,toothpaste, soap, laundry detergents without
bleach, ammonia, all-purpose cleaners,plant food(without weed killer),OTC medications(i.e.,cold/allergy
medications) and scented oils(i.e.,air fresheners and reed diffusers)
*Liquids are typically restricted in landfills. In addition, compactors may be located outside and liquids leaking
from compactor could cause stormwater compliance concerns.
BA—Universal Waste Battery
• All batteries not contained in equipment except lead-acid batteries (e.g.,mercury, lithium,nickel-cadmium,
alkaline, carbon zinc)
Example Segregation Process: Bleach vs Ammonia
Items containing bleach and ammonia must be segregated to prevent an unsafe chemical reaction. However, Target only
maintains one bin designated as"CB"for strong alkaline materials.Any item that contains any amount of bleach will be
processed into the CB bin.Ammonia products are processed into the ST bin for segregation purposes. Household
ammonia products like those sold at Target do not meet the regulatory threshold for corrosiveness, and may therefore be
disposed of as state regulated waste.
Updated September 2016
