k
CONCLUSIO'N'S REGARDINK, TEST RESULTS
From these data it appears that the tank never leaked prig to
removal and that all spilled material was recovered. One of the
fuel lines from the tank to the boiler room might have leaked,
and if it did, the contaminated area takes the form of a south-
east plume between the railroad tracks and the warehouse.
An alternate explanation could be that of casual surface soiils
along the railroad tracks . Such spill were probably corrmon over
the years in an industrial area such the port . The upper picture
in Figure 7 shows a surface hydrocarbon spill of unknown origin
that happened subsequent to both excavations . Heavy, diesel fuel
using equipment can be seen in the background of both pictures
in Figure 7.
At this time there is no evidence of groundwater contamination.
Noae of the samples from the bottom of either excavation showed
any contamination.
However, the limits of the hydrocarbon contamination shown in
the samples above have not been delineated and all of the
contaminated soil probably has riot been removed.
R ECONME,NDAT 1 ONS
1 . Bore 8 hand auger holes, about 4" in diameter, to a depth of
6 feet as shown on Figure 9. If a hand auger will not do the
job, use an auger hole drilling truck. A hand auger is sug-
gested because of the hole depth and in order to reduce
costs.
2. If a hand auger is used, collect samples by driving a 2" x
6" brass tube meun-:d on a long, "T" handle into the bottom
of holes P-1 through P-8. Have a representative from a cer-
tified laboratory collect the samples , using all QA/QC de-
scribed previously. If a truck mounted auger is used, take
samples using 2' a 6 ' brass tubes mounted in a split spoon
sampler . In either case, all sampling devices are to be
cleaned between uses in a three wash and rinse, TSP Indus-
trial strength solution. If a hand drive sampler is used,
take the samples from the bottom of the tube to ensure that
debris which might fall into the hole will not contaminate
the sample. A represntative of Hunter $ Associates will be
present to witness the drilling and sampling procedures and
to log the sample holes.
--3.----Fill -the- bore holes wi-th grout, to be Fi messed by the bHS.
4.
