In the
WP, ATC proposed destruction of a total of 72 wells. The EHD approves the WP methods and
procedures for the destruction of the 72 wells, with the follows conditions:
• Vapor Extraction Monitoring Wells VE-2 and VE-3, may be destroyed through pressure
grout destruction methods. This destruction method includes the excavation and removal
of the well box from the well. The excavation around the well casing, after the well box has
been removed, shall be at least one foot larger in diameter than the originally drilled hole
to a depth of 3 feet below surface grade. The well casing shall then be cut off and
removed 6 inches above the bottom of the excavation. Neat cement shall be pumped to
the bottom of the well through a trimie tube up to the surface, and then air pressure of 25
PSI applied for 10 minutes. The neat cement shall spill out of the top of the well casing
and form a "mushroom cap" seal with at least one foot of neat cement grout poured 6
inches above and 6 inches below the top of the cut-off casing. All water used for the
purpose of sealing a well shall be clean potable water. Water displaced from the well(s)
being destroyed may not be used in the grout mixture.
• Monitoring wells MW-1 through MW-14; nested Vapor Extraction Wells VE-1; VW-4
through VE-6; and Air Sparge wells AS-1 through AS-32 shall be destroyed by complete
removal of the well through over drilling destruction methods. This includes the removal of
the well casing, filter pack, annular seals, and other well contents frorn the borehole. The
resulting bore hole shall be filled with neat cement pumped to the bottom of the bore hole
through a trimie tube up to three feet below the Surface.
• The nested monitoring well, VE-1, shall be over drilled using an auger larger in diameter
than the original borehole. Successful removal of all contents of a nested well has been
achieved by centering the augur on the deepest cased well. The diameter of the augur
used was large enough to capture and remove all of the wells and the well contents in one
downward pass.
