N
F a COMMUNITY SProcess Hazardous Waste Management
stk- EHS- POL-015 . c
rubber or ground -glass stoppers; aluminum foil ; and polyethylene film or parafilm are not allowed . If the
waste is likely to generate gases during storage, vented caps should be used . Community Fuels does not
expect to have hazardous materials storage situations where gases are generated .
Prepare and label all waste containers with hazardous waste labels . Labels must be complete and correct
at all times . If the container is too small for a label , place it on a zip- lock bag and attach the label to the
bag .
5 . 2 . 1 SECONDARY CONTAINMENT
Secondary containment is required for all liquid hazardous wastes .
Keep incompatible wastes physically separated , in secondary containment as well as in the primary
container ( e . g . , acids and bases, oxidizers and organics, water reactives and aqueous wastes ) . As a waste
minimization strategy and to minimize cost, keep halogenated solvents from non- halogenated solvents .
5 . 3 INSPECTIONS
A monthly inspection is required by state regulations . This is performed by the EHS Manager, a laboratory
technician or any other properly trained designated responsible individual . As a best management
practice, the inspections are logged in the Satellite Accumulation Area Monthly Inspection Checklist,
included in the Process Waste Management Binder . These records must be kept for 3 years .
5 . 4 TRANSFER OF WASTE FROM SAA TO A WAA
5 . 4 . 1 WHEN TO TRANSFER
You should initiate transfer of waste from an SAA to a WAA when :
• The SAA container is full
• The SAA is approaching the storage volume limit
• The container is approaching the storage time limit
i
I • You no longer need the container to accumulate waste, or
i
i
• As often as you wish or need .
Only employees who have received proper training may transfer waste from an SAA to a WAA.
5 . 4 . 2 PROCEDURES
17
