15 November 2005
AGE-NC Project No 95-0130
4 1 CPT ADVANCEMENT
Four CPT soil borings will be advanced vertically to total depths of approximately 125 feet bsg
utilizing a 25-ton truck-mounted CPT drill ng equipped with 13/4-inch diameter hollow-stem rods
A hydraulic ram will be utilized to advance a cone penetrometer tip to total depth of each CPT
boring Soil parameters such as cone penetrometer tip resistance, sleeve friction, friction ratio(ratio
between sleeve friction and tip resistance) and pore water pressure will be continuously measured
as the cone penetrometer is advanced to total depth A continuous boring log will be generated
utilizing the Hogentogler Co CPT computer program The Hogentogler Co computer program will
utilize the CPT Soil Behavior Classification System (Robertson,P K , Campanella,R G,Gillespie,
D and Greig, J , 1986), to generate a general hthology type and display on a CPT boring log
Rinseate generated during drilling activities will be containerized in properly labeled Department
of Transportation (DOT)-approved 55-gallon drums, and stored on-site in an area lacking public
access Disposal alternatives will be evaluated at a later date based on laboratory results of rinseate
Additional CPT literature is included in Appendix B
4 2 CPT GROUND WATER SAMPLING
Multiple soil borings will be located adjacent each CPT boring (approximately 2 feet) to acquire
independent grab ground water samples in each targeted zone Based on CPT findings, discrete grab
ground water samples will be collected in significant intervals of porous and permeable strata A
Hydro-Punch sample tool will be pushed into the specified zone, then withdrawn approximately
three to four feet to expose an inlet screen The interior of the sampling tool will fill with formation
water Then water from within the sampling rods will be purged using a Waterra inertia pump and
dedicated tubing check bailer Approximately five gallons of the ground water will be removed from
the 2-inch diameter hollow-stem rod The ground water will be sampled through the dedicated tubing
equipped with 0 45 micron in-line field filter to isolate the dissolved phase hydrocarbons All
rinseate generated during drilling activities will be containerized in properly labeled DOT-approved
55-gallon drums, and stored on-site in an area lacking public access Additional CPT grab ground
water sampling procedures are included in Appendix B
Following sample collection, the samples will be transferred to laboratory-supplied containers,
properly labeled and placed in a chilled container to be transported under chain of custody to a
DHS-certified laboratory for analysis
4 3 EQUIPMENT DECONTAMINATION
All sampling tools used for sample collection will be thoroughly rinsed with clean water after being
Advanced GeoEnvironmentai,Inc
