Rigona Market
Subsurface Soil and Groundwater Investigation III Report
Page 4
Since the Geoprobe was not able to penetrate the consolidated sandy clays, the remainder
' of the work was rescheduled with a hollow stem auger and Simulprobe sampling device
' On January 21, 2003 M J Kloberdanz & Associates, using a hollow stem augur and
Simulprobe sampling device provided by V&W Drilling, advanced a soil boring to a
depth of 60 feet to collect soil and water samples west of the former UST excavation (B-
4) Soil samples were successfully collected every five feet for geological interpretation
with selected samples submitted for laboratory analysis Laboratory groundwater
samples were collected at 45 and 60 feet in depth with use of the Simulprobe sampling
' device All laboratory soil samples were below detection limits for the compounds
analyzed Low levels of gasoline, toluene, and MTBE were present in the 45-foot water
sample High levels of ethanol were also detected in the 45-foot and 60 feet water
' samples collected with the Simulprobe
Bonng B-5 was drilled on January 22, 2003 at the southeast corner of the Ripona Market
store building This boring was extremely difficult to sample because of the
unconsolidated heaving sands below the water table A grab water sample was collected
at 30 feet in depth through the hollow stem augur An attempt to sample with the
' Simulprobe was made at 45 and 55 feet in depth Once the bit was removed for the
Simulprobe sampling device, loose sand flowed into the augur The driller was unable to
push the Simulprobe sampler out of the bottom of the augur to collect a discrete water
sample However, the soil sample collected in the Simulprobe was retrieved and
analyzed A soil sample was also collected from the bottom of the drill bit at
approximately 56 feet in depth and submitted for laboratory analysis All laboratory soil
samples collected from this boring reported non-detectable concentrations for the
compounds analyzed The water sample collected at 30 feet contained high
concentrations of ethanol
Bonng B-6 was drilled on January 23, 2003 in the alley wot of the Ripona Market
facility The boring was advanced with difficulty to 60 feet due to heaving sands with
' water samples collected by the Simulprobe at 45 and 60 feet A grab water sample was
collected through the augur at depths of 30 to 35 feet All soil samples reported
contamination levels below laboratory detection limits for the compounds analyzed The
' 35 and 45-foot water samples contained levels of ethanol
An attempt to locate a seventh boring in the driveway of a rental house adjacent to the
Ripona market and east of the former UST site was made by the duller Due to overhead
electrical and safety concerns, a boring was not constructed in the driveway
' Ethanol was detected in all but one of the water samples and not detected in any of the
groundwater samples collected from the existing monitoring wells or Geoprobe samples,
it appeared that the samples may have been cross contaminated during collection
Throughout the January 2003 hollow stem augur drilling, the driller liberally used a
vegetable base oil to lubricate the augur connections, drilling rod threads and the threaded
portions of the Simulprobe sampling device The driller used "PAM" vegetable oil spray
1 .
