•
upper sample was taken from the gray clay, the lower one imme-
diately below it at 7 ' Refer to PLATE VII for details
Laboratory results of those samples , ITABLE ,JI & EXHIBIT E 1
revealed that BTEX, EDS, TPH-G, and total lead were all below
detection limits in the sample taken, at 7 ' , (S1 ) A small amount
of Xylene was present in the soil sample taken at 4 ' , (S2 , ) all
other components tested were below detection levels The removed
spoil was returned to the hole
After reviewing the results of the above work, the County EHD
stated that site closure could not occur and that additional work
would be required, refer to EXHIBIT F for documentation
At this point , Wm J Hunter & Associates , (WJH, ) was retained to
evaluate the situation and prepare a workplan for site cleanup
WJH prepared a workplan on Feb 11 , 1993, to remove additional
spoil from the site and take appropriate samples A copy of that
workplan is attached as EXHIBIT G
DISCUSSION OF OPERATIONS PEFORMED UNDER WJH WORKPLAN
• Work commenced on April 6 , 1993, under the direction of Wm
Hunter, RG, equipment was operated by Jamie Thorpe & Richard
Thorpe from Jim Thorpe Oil Operations began by removing spoil
from the west side of the existing excavation using a backhoe,
the spoil was placed on plastic at a site to the northwest of the
pit Soils consisted of gray to tan to brown sandy clays , clayey
sands , & sticky dark gray plastic clays Bedding planes were
indistinct, dipping to the south at about 15 degrees Some
irregular beds of greenish-black clay were removed, some portions
had a faint petroleum odor, while other portions did not
Excavation continued from the west wall , and all evidence of
contamination was removed While excavating at a depth of about
6 1/2 to 7 feet, water began seeping into the bottom Clean soil
was stored at the northeast side of the area, separate from the
contaminated spoil
The backhoe moved to the south part of the hole, and continued to
remove material from the site, soils consisted of a mixture of
clays & sandy clays Water continued to seep into the hole, the
depth was measured at 7 feet No "rainbow" or petroleum sheen
was observed, but a slight film of unknown composition was
apparent on portions of the water As the backhoe worked towards
the southeast side, it encountered a lense of soft, loose, gray
colored sand, which had a definite petroleum odor & apparent
discoloration As additional material was removed, the evidence
. of contamination decreased, and the sand changed to a tan to buff
4-
