• color, and the odor disappeared Some evidence of contamination was stall visible on the east wall , and the backhoe operator repositioned his equipment on the driveway on the east side to facilitate removal of the material Excavation continued on the east side of the pit, the spoil was placed on the concrete driveway and moved by a front-loader & Placed on plastic at a site to the south of the work area A layer of black sticky clay loam at about 4 feet did not show any evidence of contamination, but the lense of soft sand on the east & southeast side did have a petroleum odor When exposed to air, the color changed from a dark gray to a whitish--gray, (caused by oxidation of the hydrocarbons when exposed to air ) As excavation continued on the east & southeast side, all odors disappeared, and the sand body returned to its' natural tan to buff color, confirming the removal of the remaining contamina- tion PLATE XI shows photos of that area Margaret Lagorzo, Sr REHS from the County EHD, was present during the final stages of spoil removal After discussions with Mr Hunter, it was agreed to take five ( 5 ) soil samples from the sides of the excavation using the following procedure the . backhoe operator obtained a soil sample at selected locations using the bucket to remove the material , the geologist pushed a clean metal tube into the soil on or adjacent to, the teeth of the bucket , the sample was briefly examined, the ends of the tube were promptly covered with teflon tape & plastic caps , securely sealed with duct tape, labeled, and placed on ice for preserva- tion Using a clean glass vial , a composite water sample was taken from two locations in the bottom of the excavation by gently immersing the container in the water to prevent excessive sediment from entering The vial was sealed, checked to ensure that no head- space was present , labeled, and placed on ice for preservation Refer to PLATE IX for the locations of those samples PLATE XI is a photo showing the excavation after completion of the work After completion of the above work, the two spoil piles were sampled as follows SouthPile, (approximately 100 CY) - two composites , ( labeled "A" & "B" , ) were taken by digging down into the pile at selected locations and filling a clean metal tube with spoil Each tube was then sealed and preserved as described above NorthPile, (approximately 20 CY) - a clean metal tube was pushed into the spoil at 3 locations to fall it with spoil , it was then . sealed and preserved as described above.
