The purpose of the project was
to encapsulate approximately 15,000 cubic yards of tire ash onsite before the winter rains.
The project encompassed removing the ash from the side slopes and lower canyon;
excavating oil-saturated soil; consolidating the ash residue in the upper western canyon;
placing a compacted monolithic, 5-foot clay cover over the ash material; installing erosion
protection devices; and constructing a retention basin. Sukut Construction performed
remediation under Contract IWM-05050 while the design and construction management was
performed by CH2M HILL and the CIWMB under Contract IWM-C5051.
The project lasted 20 weeks and was completed on February 4, 1997, after repairing the
erosion damage from the January 1997 storms.
CIWMB 11
