Of the 22-28 million scrap tires produced
in California,
^ 2 to 3.3 million are retreaded
6 to 9 million are used for energy
► 7.5 to 16.5 million are shredded
and/or landfilled
1.3 to 2 million are exported
Several million tires are left unaccounted
for. That is millions of tires per year, on
top of the millions of tires already stock-
piled in managed and unmanaged sites.
While State regulations have been written
to remediate the potential threat, the
reality may be an increase in illegal tire
dumps in rural and out-of-the-way spots.
The developing concern for the fire ser-
vice will be larger unregulated scrap tire
storage sites. As restrictions get tougher,
we can expect a greater frequency, if not
greater intensity, of tire fires. Winchester,
Virginia is an extreme example of a tire
fires intensity. At this site, an estimated
6-9 million tires burned for nine months.
Eight hundred thousand gallons of oil
were reclaimed in this fire.
Many states and local communities have
tried to discourage waste tire storage
through regulations. The fact is we are all
responsible for the piles of discarded tires.
Each community and state must come to
terms with scrap tire storage. Finding a
creative means to deal effectively with the
problem will continue to be our collective
challenge.
2
