depths based on observed field conditions under the direction of the CIWMB project <br /> engineer/manager. <br /> If the solid waste disposal area is undisturbed, discrete sampling will be used to assess the <br /> soil and to estimate the extent of waste. Drive samples will be collected for samples <br /> requiring VOC analyses. A new disposable shovel will be used to collect soil from discrete <br /> intervals for non-VOC analyses within the solid waste disposal area. Approximately three <br /> discrete sampling depths will be sampled for defining the vertical extent of waste soil. The <br /> sampling technician will select sampling locations and depths based on observed field <br /> conditions under the direction of the CIWMB project engineer/manager. <br /> 4.2. Sampling Procedures <br /> The sampling team will coordinate holding times, detection limits, and sample volume with <br /> the specified laboratory before collecting samples. Samples will be collected at locations <br /> selected by the CIWMB engineer/manager based on visual inspection of the stockpile or <br /> waste areas. The exact number of samples will depend upon the number of solid waste <br /> disposal areas, estimated volume of waste material, and volume required for analytical <br /> methods. Samples will be collected for each contiguous area/pile. Debris (e.g., concrete, <br /> rocks, construction waste, and tires) will be removed prior to sampling. <br /> 4.2.1. Volatile Organic Procedures <br /> If it is determined that VOC analysis is necessary, then these samples will be collected first. <br /> The VOC samples will be obtained by driving a brass or stainless steel sampling sleeve <br /> directly into the soil to be sampled. After the sampler is full, the sampling sleeve will be <br /> removed from the sampler, then will be sealed with Teflon squares and plastic end caps, <br /> labeled, chilled and processed for shipment to the laboratory under chain-of-custody <br /> protocol. <br /> 4.2.2. Rion-Volatile Organic Procedures <br /> Soil samples will be collected by scraping below surface. Sufficient soil will be collected from <br /> each pile using decontaminated or sample-dedicated disposable trowels, placed in a <br /> decontaminated or sample-dedicated disposable bucket, and thoroughly mixed. The sample <br /> will then be transferred to a new sample container, sealed, labeled, and placed in a chilled <br /> cooler for transport to the analytical laboratory. At the completion of sampling activities, the <br /> sampling team will transport the selected samples to the analytical laboratory for analyses <br /> using standard chain-of-custody protocol. <br /> 4.3. Sample Locations <br /> Sample locations will be selected at the discretion of the CIWMB project engineer/manager. <br /> Exact soil sampling locations will be determined in the field based on accessibility, safety, <br /> and to fulfill the project objectives. Soil sample locations will be recorded in the field logbook. <br /> A sketch of the sample location will be entered into the logbook and any physical reference <br /> points will be labeled. If possible, distances to the reference points will be recorded.
