Metals were not detected above maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) <br /> in samples collected from wells MW-5 and PW-1 after well development or from wells <br /> MW-1 through MW-5 during the second quarter 2003 sampling event. The metal <br /> concentrations reported for monitoring well samples are shown on Figure 4. <br /> Based on a comparison of groundwater quality data between the downgradient wells <br /> and the upgradient well located at the Site, the tire fire does not appear to have <br /> impacted groundwater quality beneath the Site. Zinc, a constituent of concern in the <br /> burn piles, was reported in groundwater samples collected from the five wells during <br /> the second quarter 2003 at very low concentrations ranging from 0.0040 mg/l (MW-2) <br /> to 0.055 mg/l (MW-5). Additionally, lead, another potential constituent of concern, <br /> exhibited concentrations in the groundwater samples ranging from 0.00008 (MW-4) to <br /> 0.00017 (MW-1 and MW-2). These concentrations of zinc and lead are significantly <br /> less than their respective MCLs. <br /> Field Parameters. <br /> Values of pH in groundwater samples collected from Site monitoring wells were <br /> neutral and ranged from 7.2 in well MW-3 to 7.4 in wells MW-1, MW-2, and MW-5. <br /> Concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the groundwater samples collected <br /> from site wells ranged from 623 mg/l in the sample collected from MW-1 to 1040 mg/l <br /> in the sample collected from MW-3. The secondary MCL for TDS is 500 mg/1. The <br /> sample collected from the upgradient well (MW-3) contains a higher concentration of <br /> TDS when compared to the downgradient site wells suggesting that the TDS <br /> concentrations detected are likely representative of background conditions. <br /> Turbidity concentrations measured in the field ranged from 81 NTUs in the sample <br /> collected from MW-1 to 99 NTUs in the sample collected from MW-2. Turbidity <br /> values for groundwater samples analyzed in the laboratory ranged from 898 NTUs in <br /> the sample collected from MW-4 to 3420 NTUs in the sample collected from MW-1. <br /> Turbidity will be measured in the field during the third quarter 2003 sampling event. <br /> Monitoring Parameters. <br /> As presented in Figure 5, concentrations of monitoring parameters in groundwater <br /> samples collected from the Site were generally consistent across the Site. <br /> Concentrations of total alkalinity ranged from 198 mg/l in the sample collected from <br /> monitoring well MW-1 to 316 mg/l in MW-3. Analytical results for specific <br /> conductance for Site monitoring wells ranged from 962 µmhos/cm (MW-2) to 1540 <br /> µmhos/cm (MW-3). Concentrations of nitrate detected in groundwater samples ranged <br /> from 0.74 mg/l in monitoring well MW-3 to 3.5 mg/l in monitoring well MW-2. <br /> Concentrations of sulfate in the groundwater samples ranged from 115 mg/l in the <br /> sample collected from MW-2 to 246 mg/l in the sample collected from MW-3. All <br /> samples collected were below the secondary MCL for sulfate of 250 mg/1.
