sb 2.2.5 Volatile Nitrosamines Nitrosamines are derivatives of amines. Typically, a nitrosamine is formed by the reaction of an amine with a nitrite. These substances are also produced by the action of nitrate-reducing bacteria. Nitrosamines occur in trace Quantities in tobacco smoke, processed food, meat products and salted fish. Many nitrosamines are used as gasoline and lubricant additives, antioxidants, stabilizers and softeners for copolymers. These compounds are noncombustible liquids or solids at ambient temperature. The hazardous properties of nitrosamines are different from those of their parent aliphatic or aromatic amines. Chronic exposure to these compounds can cause jaundice and liver damage. In addition, the other toxic effects caused by methyl and ethyl nitrosamines include nausea, vomiting, ulceration and increase in body temperature. Nitrosamines are potent animal and human carcinogens, which may cause cancers in liver, kidney, lung, bladder and pancreas. WARNING: Some Nitrosamines are known to the State of California to cause cancer. 2.3 Biological Hazards The potential biological hazards anticipated at the Tire Fire Remediation project include: Ticks; Snakes; Poisonous Spiders [Black Widow and Brown Recluse]; Bees/Wasps: 4 Poison Oak; 4- Valley Fever; -4- Hantavirus. 2.3.1 Ticks Lyme disease is an infection that is caused by a corkscrew-shaped bacterium known as a spirochete. Unlike other infections, Lyme disease may not be confined to one area of the body. It is spread by tick bites. These ticks live in or near wooded areas, tall grass, or brush areas. They feed on birds, mice, deer, or humans. The threat of Lyme disease lasts from spring to fall, with summer being the high-risk season.
