sb
The brown recluse spider lives throughout the Southern half of the United States.
j There are ten different species, six of which are confirmed to be poisonous. It is
sometimes called a "fiddle back" spider, is light tan to dark brown in color and has a
dark violin-shaped mark on its back. It is about the size of a Quarter; walks on long, thin
legs; and hides in dark, dry, warm places like a closet, woodpile, in old rags and dusty
piles of cloth. It is important to get to the doctor right away after a bite, since the
venom kills the tissue around the region of the bite and treatments can lessen the
damage. These spiders are about 0.5 inch (1.3 cm) in length, with the aforementioned
? violin-shaped mark on the upper side of the cephalothorax.
The brown recluse spider bite generally causes some mild stinging or burning and
ulcerative necrosis may follow within several hours to several weeks. The initial lesion
may be red, blanched and may later may develop a blue-gray halo around the puncture.
The lesion may evolve into lesions surrounded by purpura. Other clinical findings may
include fever, maliase, a scarlatiniform rash, leukocytosis, vomiting, and diarrhea.
2.3.4 Bees and Wasps
3 There are about 5000 species of bees in North America. Bees belong to a group of
stinging insects called Hymenoptera, which includes wasps, hornets,yellow jackets and
fire ants. A bee sting is always potentially serious. The severity and duration of a
reaction can vary from one person to another. In addition, one's own reaction to a bee
sting may differ between occurrences. Bites from bees, hornets, wasps and yellow
jackets may feel like getting a shot. A small red area of raised skin surrounded by a
} whitish area develops at the site of the sting. The area may feel a little bit hot and may
ache. It also may itch a lot. In most cases, the symptoms will be gone in a few hours.
Most people will have a normal reaction to these stings. However some will have a
l local reaction, which include abnormal amounts of swelling and pain. Around two out
of every 100 people will have an allergic reaction to a bee sting. The symptoms of an
allergic reaction can include hives, tightness in the throat, nausea, dizziness, along with
difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, vomiting, thick speech, confusion and other
dangerous symptoms that can lead to death_ If you knowyou are allergic to bees,you
} should always carry what's called an anaphylaxis kit withyou. These kits contain a dose
or doses of epinephrine. This drug may improve symptoms untilyou can get emergency
medical treatment. There are a couple of different types of kits, andyou can get one
withyour doctor's prescription.
Bee Avoidance - Personnel
t Stay away from places whereyou know there are stinging insects nests;
Don't wear perfume or sweet smelling sunscreen;
Sb Environmental Services,LLC© October,2003 California Integrated Waste Management Board
Site Specific Health and Safety Plan Page 19 of 62 Tracy Tire Fire Remediation Project
