sb
mak- Don't wear bright colored clothing, baggy clothes and tie up long hair. [Bees
may get stuck inside loose clothing and long hair;
- Keep all food covered and don't drink out of open cans;
If you can't avoid getting stung, back up slowly and don't make any sudden
movements. Running away swatting at bees just makes them angrier.
Although all wasps will defend their nests, Yellow Jackets and hornets are the most
aggressive and are the ones that cause the most problems. They can be distinguished
from bees by their thin "waists." Bees are thick-waisted. When a wasp stings, it injects
a venomous fluid under the skin. The venom causes a painful swelling that may last
several days. In some cases a wasp sting may cause severe illness or even death. The
most persistent wasps at picnics and outdoor meals are Yellow Jackets. They're looking
for meat, proteins or sugary foods or drinks. Yellow Jackets become more aggressive
and likely to sting in late summer and early fall when the colony is declining.
Wasps can usually be identified by their nests and their location. Hornets, Polistes and
mud daubers build nests above the ground. Hornets and Polistes nest in trees,
shrubbery and under eaves. Mud daubers nest under eaves, porch roofs or similar
sheltered areas. Yellow jackets usually build their nests in the ground, but sometimes
build them above the ground. Cicada killers nest in the ground.
Hornets, yellow jackets, Polistes, mud daubers and the cicada killers are all wasps.
They are generally considered to be beneficial because they attack and destroy many
harmful insects found around homes and gardens. Hornets andyellow jackets kill such
pests as house flies, blow flies and various caterpillars. Polistes are predators of corn
earworms, armyworms and many other garden pests. Though beneficial, wasps also
attack people. If disturbed, hornets, yellow jackets and Polistes will sting. Mud daubers
and cicada killers usually are not as aggressive and will not sting unless touched or
accidentally caught in clothing. If wasps build nests on houses or in bushes where
children play or living activities are carried on, nest destruction or chemical control is
necessary.
Note: If removal of a nest is necessary, the best option is to get professional help from
a pest control company or a bee keeper, because any disturbance around a nest can
trigger a mass attack. tryout choose to do it yourself, complete body coverage and
protection is essential, because Yellow Jackets can find even small openings.
2.3.5 Poison Oak
Poison oak is known by a number of local names because of its wide variation of
appearance in different locations. Some poison oak has heavy, rough, woody vines.
Others are trailing shrubs that run on the ground, while others are erect, woody shrubs.
The leaf shape differs on different plants as well as on the same plant. One thing
remains the same: there are always three leaflets.
sb Environmental Services,LLC O October,2003 California Integrated Waste Management Board
Site Specific Health and Safety Plan Page 20 of 62 Tracy Tire Fire Remediation Project
