sb
fungus or in retarding the growth of the fungus is given. Symptoms can be very mild to
severe. Symptoms typically include fever, aching, shills, sweats, fatigue, cough and
headache, which are commonly associated with the "flu".
A person may develop what amounts to a slight cold which Quickly subsides. He or she
will never know that the "cold" was really a mild case of valley fever unless a skin or
blood test for valley fever is performed and is positive. About 60% of all cases of valley
fever are in this "mild" category. The remaining 40% of people have more sever
symptoms which include: a prominent fever and cough, skin rashes; joint aches,
especially those involving the knees. It may take up to 6 months for these symptoms to
subside. The spreading of the disease from the lungs to other areas [i.e., skin, bones,
other organs, including the brain] is called dissemination, with the most dangerous
form infecting the brain lining [i.e., meningitis], and the type most likely to end in
death.
2.3.7 Hantavirus
Hantavirus has resulted in several deaths, primarily in the southwestern part of the
United States. While there have not been any outbreaks or notices of the virus at the
project site, field team members should be aware of the cause and potential control
methods. The Hantavirus has been shown to be transmitted through the aerosolization
of dried rodent excreta. The Hantavirus-associated disease begins with one or more
symptoms including fever, muscle ache, headache, and cough, and progresses rapidly
to severe lung disease, often reQuiring intensive care treatment. To control potential
contact with dust that may be carrying the rodent excreta, the field team shall conduct a
visual survey of the area around each site to note whether rodents are thriving in the
area. If it is determined that non-domesticated rodents may be living near the work
area, or that the area is affected by wind-blown dust, dust suppression techniQues
and/or respiratory protection [dust mask or air purifying respirators with dust filters]
will be reQuired. The Center for Disease Control has established a hotline for inQuiries
regarding the Hantavirus [800-532-9929].
2.4 Physical Hazards
The major potential physical hazards found at the TTFS include:
2.4.1 Noise
The proposed project area is located within an abandoned gravel pit. Although there
are no current operations on the site, the site is presently exposed to moderate to high
ambient noise levels. The primary source of moderate ambient noise affecting the
project site is intermittent aircraft noise because the site is located within the City of
Tracy Airport's Airport Overlay Zone. Additionally, industrial noise form the adjacent
Sb Environmental Services,LLC O October,2003 California Integrated Waste Management Board
Site Specific Health and Safety Plan Page 22 of 62 Tracy Tire Fire Remediation Project
