This results in <br /> occasional moderate to high ambient noise levels. <br /> Noise can interfere with worker communications and can be annoying to the workers. A <br /> - prolonged exposure to excessive noise levels can overtime, permanently destroy hair- <br /> like receptors located within the inner ear causing hearing loss. Noise <br /> intensity/loudness is measured in decibels [dBA] using the "A"weighted scale. The "A" <br /> scale is used for compliance purposes because it best approximates the ears response <br />-) to noise Some of the dangerous exposure levels are: <br /> .i1 90 dBA over an 8-hour exposure time - risk of hearing loss; <br /> 7 100 dBA over 2 hours - risk of hearing loss; <br /> 100-120 dBA for any length of time is considered dangerous; <br /> t 120-130 dBA- usually the pain threshold for most individuals; <br /> 7 140+ dBA single exposures can cause permanent hearing loss. <br />-' According to CaVOSHA, the action level for noise is 85 dBA and the PEL is 90 dBA <br /> based upon an 8-hour TWA. If the action level is exceeded, a hearing conservation <br /> program will be reQuired, which includes: monitoring, audiometric testing, hearing <br /> protection and training. The potential for elevated noise exposure always exists when <br /> operating or working around heavy equipment. When loud noise is present or normal <br />-i conversation becomes difficult, hearing protection in the form of ear plugs, or <br /> :} equivalent, will be reQuired. <br /> 2.4.2 Heat Stress <br /> Heat stress is considered to be one of the primary physical hazards which may be <br /> encountered on site. In order to mitigate the effects of potential heat stress, a <br /> proactive approach will be taken. The main emphasis will be placed upon education of <br /> the workers and good communication between the workers and management personnel. <br /> All on-site personnel will be made familiar with the symptoms of heat stress in <br /> themselves and others, and the conditions during which it may occur. <br /> J <br /> :. Heat stress symptoms may include elevated heart rate, nausea, headache, <br /> lightheadedness, lack of coordination or decreased job performance and slurred <br /> speech. Where site conditions warrant, a qualified person will monitor for heat stress <br /> and implement work/rest regimens, as necessary. Workers will have scheduled breaks <br /> every few hours in a shaded area. <br /> 2.4.3 Slips, Trips and Falls <br /> There is a potential for physical hazards resulting from tripping over metal objects, <br /> tools, hoses, and other eQuipment laying on the ground as well as uneven terrain. <br /> Improper use and/or maintenance of equipment and tools is another potential source of <br />-= physical hazards on site.
