`t
i
..
sb
The purpose of PPE is to protect employees from hazards and potential hazards they
are likely to encounter during site activities. The amount and type of PPE used will be
based on the nature of the hazard encountered or anticipated. Dermal protection,
primarily in the form of chemical-resistant gloves and coveralls, will be worn whenever
contact with chemically affected materials (e.g., soil, groundwater, sludge) is
` anticipated, without regard to the level of respiratory protection reQuired.
-I 2.4.6 Wind Direction
") The predominant wind direction in this area of California varies and can come from
- j the north, northwest, north-northwest, and west-southwest with wind speeds up to 60
miles per hour. Due to the topography and meteorological conditions in the Tracy area,
} air contaminants tend to get trapped in the valley. Site specific data collected at the
site from April through August, 2001, indicated that the predominant wind direction
through the canyon at the Tracy site is up canyon [from the north-northeast during the
day (lam — 7pm] and down canyon [from the west-southwest] at night [7pm to 7am].
Average wind speeds ranged from zero to 16 miles per hour during this period.
2.4.7 Vehicular Traffic
Vehicular traffic and heavy eQuipment present another potential physical hazard.
;) Measures will be taken to control the flow of traffic and eQuipment on site, including
'i the use of traffic cones, caution tape and barricades, as reouired. Workers must wear
safety vests and maintain line of sight with eQuipment operators at all times.
Communication will be by standard construction hand signals. Heavy eQuipment will
- have right-of-way over other vehicles and personnel at all times. EQuipment, including
"a earth-moving eQuipment, drill rigs, or other heavy machinery, will be operated in
compliance with the manufacturer's instructions, specifications, and limitations, as well
as any applicable regulations. The operator is responsible for inspecting the eQuipment
daily to verify that it is functioning properly and safely.
1
2.4.8 Wildlife
Wildlife usually avoid people. Unhealthy or threatened wildlife may be aggressive.
Potential hazards due to animal bites are best controlled by cautiously entering new
`3 areas and avoiding animals. If bitten, the victim should be immediately transported to
receive proper medical attention. The condition and behavior of the animal should be
.. noted and reported to the physician.
}
_f
3
5b Environmental Services, LIC O October,2003 California Integrated Waste Management Board
-s3 Site Specific Health and Sarety Plan Page 2S or 62 Tracy Tire Fire Remediation Project
-
