Analytical Methods and
Procedures
4.1 Non-Definitive Methods and Procedures
Visual inspection of the soils for lithological content using the
Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) will be used for the
geological logging of boreholes. The XRF will be utilized to
characterize the soils for metals of concern. The Standard
Operating Procedure for the XRF, EPA Method 6200 and one
written by START will be used (Appendix B&C).
4.2 Definitive Methods and Procedures
Parameters to be analyzed at the site are dictated by research of
contamination found at tire fire sites.
Soil metal analysis will be performed with the XRF. In addition, at
least ten percent of the samples will be sampled for laboratory
analysis. Soil samples sent to the laboratory will be analyzed for
total metals by EPA method 6010B. Should shallow groundwater
be encountered with the Geoprobe®, samples will be collected and
submitted to the laboratory and analyzed for total metals by EPA
method 6010B.
Soil samples will be submitted to the laboratory for analysis of
volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using EPA method 8260B.
Water samples for purgeable compounds will be submitted to the
laboratory and analyzed using EPA method 524.2.
Soil sampled for phenols compounds will be sent to the laboratory
for analyzes by EPA method 8040 and phenols water samples will
be analyzed by EPA method 604.
Soil sampled for polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs)
compounds will be sent to the laboratory and analyzed by EPA
method 8100. Water samples to be analyzed for base/neutrals,
acids and pesticides (BNAs) be analyzed by EPA method 525.
Background and confirmation samples will be submitted to a
laboratory for analysis as outlined in Section 5.7. Field screening
background samples, utilizing the XRF will be analyzed in the
same manner as sample locations located in the landfill area.
Analytical data generated by a laboratory will meet Superf ind data
category criteria for"definitive data."
09:C:\MyFiles\PROJECT\Tracy_Tire\QASP\QASP_0339.wpd-11/30/96 4-1
