5.3 Soil Sampling
5.3.1 Shallow Subsurface Soil Sampling
5.3.1.1 Grab Sampling
Sample locations will be selected as outlined in Section 5.6.
Subsurface soil samples will be collected by excavating to a depth
of no greater than 0.5 feet below ground surface (bgs) using a
stainless steel trowel, which will be decontaminated between
sample locations. If necessary, an aliquot will be collected for
VOC analysis before homogenizing the sample. Samples will be
homogenized by mixing the soil with a trowel. After
homogenization, material in the pail will be transferred into the
appropriate sample containers. To prevent potential contaminant
migration to or from the sample, containers will be filled to the top
with measures taken to prevent soil from remaining on the lid
threads prior to being sealed. After the sample containers are
filled, they will be immediately sealed, chilled, and processed for
shipment to the lab.
When field screening is to be performed on the sample, an aliquot
of soil will be obtained from the sample pail, placed in a plastic
baggie and chilled until processed by the field analyst.
Steel trowels will be decontaminated before each use. The pails
are disposable and will be discarded after each use.
5.3.1.2 Composite Sampling
Composite sample locations will be selected as outlined in Section
5.6. A number of grab samples from different locations will be
collected by digging with a steel trowel and put into a sample-
dedicated disposable pail. If necessary, an aliquot will be collected
for VOC analysis before homogenizing the sample as a grab
sample. Samples will be homogenized by mixing the soil with a
trowel. Material in the pail will be transferred into the appropriate
sample containers. To prevent potential contaminant migration to
or from the sample, containers will be filled to the top with
measures taken to prevent soil from remaining on the lid threads
prior to being sealed. After the sample containers are filled, they
will be immediately sealed, chilled, and processed for shipment to
the lab.
Steel trowels will be decontaminated before each use. The pails
are disposable and will be discarded after each use.
09:C:\MyFiles\PROJECT\Tracy_Tire\QASP\QASP_0339.wpd-11/30/98 5-2
