€' 5.3.2 Deep Subsurface Soil Sampling
Sample locations will be selected as outlined in Section 5.6.
Samples will be collected with the Geoprobe® hydraulic sampling
device in accordance with EPA Environmental Response Team
Standard Operating Procedure 2050 and Geoprobe® Systems
company guidance. Samples will be collected in acetate sleeves.
When retrieved from the borehole, the sample sleeve will be
capped, labeled to identify the top and bottom of the core, and
E sealed in a plastic sample bag for further processing.
I
Soil samples will be extruded from the sleeve into a dedicated,
disposable pail and homogenized by mixing the soil with a trowel.
Material in the pail will be transferred with a trowel into the
appropriate sample containers. Should a VOC analysis be
performed on the samples the acetate sleeve will be capped, sealed
i and processed. Sample containers will be filled to the top with
measures taken to prevent soil from remaining on the treads prior
to being sealed to prevent potential contaminant migration to or
from the sample. After the sample containers are filled, they will
immediately be sealed, chilled, and processed for shipment to the
I lab.
When field screening is to be performed on the sample, an aliquot
of soil will be obtained from the sample pail, placed in a plastic
bag and chilled until processed by the field analyst.
Non-dedicated sampling equipment that will require
decontamination are the Geoprobe® samplers, fittings, and rods
and the trowel. Disposable equipment to be discarded are the pails
! and acetate liners.
I
5.4 Groundwater Sampling
5.4.1 Groundwater Sampling from Geoprobe® Boreholes
I
It is not known if shallow groundwater will be encountered at the
site. Should groundwater be found at one of the soil sample
locations or at any of the sample locations selected as outlined in
Section 5.6, a groundwater boring will be made with the
Geoprobe® System. The boreholes will not be deeper then 30 feet
bgs and will be constructed with 1-inch rod, a mill slotted well
point, and a 1.5-inch drive point.
in line attached or
Astainless-steel, 7/16-inch bailer, with fishing ,
teflon tubing will be inserted into the drive rods to collect
I groundwater for analysis. The groundwater will be transferred to
pre-preserved 40-m1 VOC vials. The vials will be inverted and
checked for air bubbles to ensure zero headspace. If bubbles
PVC appear, the vial contents will be discarded and a new vial will be
polyvinyl chloride E filled. After the VOC sample is collected, a teflon tube will be
09:C:\MyFiles\PROJECT\Tnry_Tire\QASP\QASP_0339.wpd-1 Ip0/98 5-3
